Hiring in the construction and real estate sector surged 86 per cent between March 2023 and 2024. This surge in demand has also been accompanied by a 57 per cent rise in the interest of job seekers, with Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai being the leading cities, according to a report by job search portal Indeed.

According to Indeed’s data, Delhi saw the highest hiring in the construction sector with 5.05 per cent share, followed by Bengaluru (4.68 per cent) and Mumbai (4.13 per cent). This could be driven by a strong business environment, uptick in warehousing and industrial needs, commercial housing requirements as migration rises, opening of manufacturing facilities, and more.

“Smaller cities such as Ernakulum (2 per cent), Kochi (1.50 per cent), Lucknow (1.38 per cent), and Calicut (1.25 per cent) are among the top regions capturing job seeker interest. This trend could be attributed to affordable costs of living, or local opportunities that allow job seekers to work closer to their homes. Tier 2 & 3 cities with maximum job postings comprise Ernakulum, Calicut, Kochi,” Indeed said in a statement.

The in-demand job roles capturing the maximum share in job postings include engineers (17.18 per cent), project leads and supervisors (8 per cent), and architects (5 per cent). In alignment with the demand, the job seeker interest also lies with engineers (21.31 per cent), project leads and supervisors (9.33 per cent), and architects (4.27 per cent). As construction becomes more complex and technical, the industry is calling for more skilled professionals.

Based on the findings, Sashi Kumar, head (sales) at Indeed India, said, “The construction industry continues to be a key driver of economic growth presenting immense opportunities for skilled professionals to semi-skilled labor. The substantial uptick in hiring signals promising prospects for job seekers and employers alike while the significant rise in job seeker interest also reflects a robust momentum in the industry.”
